It is with great regret that we announce the death of Marta Černá aged 85. Marta served the College well for many years in reception. She retired only last July and will be remembered with great affection. Her funeral took place on Friday 19 June.
The IMPAC Czech Young Writers Award
June 2009
We congratulate Ivan Mikyska, who was awarded the diploma for 2nd place in the IMPAC Czech Young Writers' Award 2009 in the under 15 category for his story "Invisible Hands " on 24 May at a ceremony attended by the first lady of the Czech Republic, Mrs Livia Klausova.
Youth competition in writing letters
June 2009
We congratulate Alžběta Šimková on achieving a third place in the Czech section of the 38th International Youth Competition in Writing Letters organized by International Post Union and Czech Post. This year's topic was: "Write a letter to a person explaining how a good working environment may improve his or her life".
Portrait of The Right Honourable Lord Holme of Cheltenham
22 May 2009
On 22 May, Lady Holme unveiled a portrait of her late husband, The Right Honourable Lord Holme of Cheltenham, at the College. Lord Holme was Chairman of Governors of The English College in Prague from 1994 to 2008 and Chairman of The English College Foundation from 1992-2008. He was a regular visitor to Prague and took a very great interest in the growth and development of the College. His portrait was painted by a student of the College, Ivana Růžičková.

Czech National Under 17 Rowing Team

We congratulate Krystof Koran on being selected as a member of the Czech National Under 17 Rowing Team to compete in a championship for Central European countries in Prague on 21/22 May.

We congratulate Tomas Cejnar on being selected to represent the country as a member of the national sailing team at a sailing event in Holland from 20-24 May.
Theatre play Katharine by Golem Players
22, 23 and 24 May 2009
Angels, ghosts, miracle, magic and memories are all combined in an innovative, original play from the English College in Prague's Golem Players. Romantic comedy 'Katharine' is about a Parisian artist on retreat in Provence who is surprised to find out that she is sharing her bed with an unexpected guest. Lucien, a medieval gnostic monk hiding in the cottage is equally surprised. You can see the play on 22, 23 a 24 May from 6 p.m. at Divadlo Inspirace. More information on www.praguefringe.com.
Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic
15 May 2009
Irena Moozová, Head of Representation of the European Commission in the Czech Republic, gave presentation on the Representation's mission and the European Union institutions on Friday this week. She spoke about how the EU functions and what are the different responsibilities of the various institutions. After the presentation, there was a space for students to ask questions and discuss issues related to the EU. All participants had a unique opportunity to learn more about an institution of which the Czech Republic is a member since 1 May 2004.

On the 1st May there will be traditional reading of Mácha´s poem May on Petřín hill at the statue of Mácha. Flowers, candles, musical instruments and Máj take with you. We will start at 8.00 PM.
Entrance Examination Results

Presentation by King's College, Cambridge
27 April 2009
The College is pleased to announce that at 4.00 pm on Monday 27 April, Dr Stefan Uhlig, Tutor for Admissions and Director of Studies in English at King's College, Cambridge, will give a presentation in English with Czech translation about how to apply to Cambridge University and in particular to King's College. All are welcome to attend, but anyone who wishes to do so must register with the College beforehand by phone (#283 893 113) or email (office@englishcollege.cz).
Uganda photo exhibition
1st - 26th April 2009
Two weeks, five charitable organisations and many smiling, welcoming faces sum up the experiences of Jiří Čevora, a student from the English College in Prague when he joined a school visit to Uganda in December 2008. His photographs offer a glimpse into his experiences of the country. The photographs are for sale. Profits will be donated to selected
charitable projects. Exhibition is held at Bar Krásný Ztráty (Náprstkova 10, Praha 1, http://www.krasnyztraty.cz/) from 1st to 26th April. Official preview will take place on 16th April from 6 p.m.

Easter Holidays
27th March - 13th April 2009
The school will break for Easter holidays between 27th March and 13th April 2009. Reception will be open during the holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offices until 3 p.m., all except for the period from 8th to 13th April 2009 when the school will be officially closed. We look forward to welcoming the students on 14th April 2009 as usual.
The Duke of Edinburgh Scheme
March 2009
The Headmaster presented one bronze award and 15 silver awards gained under the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme to 15 students. The scheme, which rewards individual initiative, courage, teamwork and community service, is highly regarded worldwide and is respected by universities and employers.
UK Intermediate Mathematics Challenge
March 2009
Participants in the UK Intermediate Mathematics Challenge heard this month how successful they had been. 12 students gained bronze certificates, 6 silver, and 5 gold, with Petr Zelenka best in school. Dominik Teiml and Petr Zelenka were invited to take part in the next round of the competition called Pink Kangaroo.

Indoor Athletic Junior Championship

We congratulate Michal Dvořák who has won a silver medal in the 2009 Indoor Athletic Junior Championship in Prague in the 800 metres and has become Junior Vice-Champion of the Czech Republic. He is a member of the Czech National Junior Athletic team.

HMC Projects in Central and Eastern Europe scheme

We congratulate Alžběta Husáková on being awarded a scholarship to spend a year at a boarding school in England from September 2009 under the HMC Projects in Central and Eastern Europe scheme. She was one of only five candidates selected from the whole of the Czech Republic.
Fair Trade Week
23 - 27 February 2009
This week at ECP is Faitrade week! The Global Action Schools team is working to build awareness of Fairtrade by organising a range of events that fall both within and outside the school curricula. Every day a team are manning a stall outside Vysoncanska metro station on Sokolovska giving out free tea, coffee and chocolate to raise awareness of Fairtrade within the local community. Free samples and information have been provided by four Fairtrade partners (see links below). Two of which, Lenka Černá from Excellent and Daniel Kolský from MamaCoffee are presenting to year 4 during economics lessons. The highlight of the week is the premiere of El Mundo Verde a spanish play written by year 2 student Ivan Mykika all about Guatemala. Aptitude test
12th February 2009
To help you make the final decision, the College provides an aptitude test before the actual entrance examination. The test will be held on 12th February between 9.00 and 10.30 a.m. and will consist of three short papers: English, Maths and IQ. This aptitude test is not an examination and is not obligatory, and no marks or grades will be published. It will, however, enable us to advise you on the suitability of your child for the College, in case you have any doubts about whether your child will succeed at the College. If you would like your child to sit the test, please let us know before 10 February at the latest.
After the test, you may contact Mrs Rozkoná on 17-20 February. She will be able to give you information and advice about the entrance examination on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 30th April 2009 . The invitation and further details will be sent out well in advance.
CHOIR WEEKEND
6 - 8 February
Members of the ECP Chamber Choir spent a weekend with Ms. Gavlasová and Ms. Filipovičová in the attractive sport area S-centrum in Benešov. They were practising and preparing a new repertoire for the ECP Spring concert which will take part in Salesiánské Divadlo in Prague - Kobylisy on 24th March. Pictures from the weekend are available

Holme-Borden Scholarship
2nd February 2009
We congratulate Ivana Ruzickova on being the first recipient of the Holme-Borden Scholarship, which will enable her to study for her degree for four years at the prestigious Bennington College in the USA. This scholarship was partly funded by Lord Holme of Cheltenham, former Chairman of Governors of The English College, who died last year, and serves as a memorial for his services to the College.
Skiing / snowboarding weeks
4th - 18th January 2009
Between the dates of January 4th and 18th 2009 the department of physical education organised two skiing/snowboarding weeks and an international slalom race, respectively. All that took place in Pec pod Sněžkou, Krkonoše. Some pictures from the events can be seen

ECA Theatre visiting

Mrs Kulhavá wishes all students a happy New Year and she looks forward to another set of exciting theatre performances. What should expect in the 2009?
29th January - Performance called "Berta - aneb od soumraku do úsvitu", a story of Czech Bridget Jones at Minor theatre. Performed by actors from Vinohradské theatre who played the "Děvčátko s mozkem" which many of you loved last year. Meeting: 7.15 pm at the theatre, beginning of performace 7.30 pm (seats are not numbered i.e. "first come, first served").
5th February - Performance called "Zázrak v černém domě" by Milan Uhde at Divadla Na zábradlí. Tragic komedy about one curious family will take us back to the period from 30's to 90's of the last century. Meeting: 6.45 pm at the theatre, beginning of performace 7.00 pm.

Prize of the President of Poland
9th December 2008
We congratulate Suzanna Laskowska on being awarded a prize by the President of Poland as one of the best teenagers in sport in her home town of Koszalin. Suzanna is a sailor who won first place in the Central European Cadet Cup competition this summer, and second place in the Polish Cadet Cup and took part in the World Championships in the Netherlands.
Christmas Concert

European Science Parliament in Aachen

We congratulate the four ECP students who were chosen to represent the College at the European Science Parliament in Aachen in early October. The Parliament discussed the topic "Will the lights go out in 2050?" from a geo-political, technological, sociological, individual and economic perspective. A final declaration was issued (see

Model NATO

FORUM 2000 conference

Twenty English College students were invited to attend this year's FORUM 2000 conference in Žofín from 12-14 October on the theme of 'Openness and Fundamentalism in the 21st Century'. The conference was opened by former President Václav Havel and had contributions from distinguished experts from many parts of the world.

ECP Chamber Choir ALTER EGO
17th October
The ECP Chamber Choir performed at the prize-giving ceremony of the ALTER EGO international competition (intended for students aged 14-18) in Dům národnostních menšin on 7th October. The event was organized by the Czech Centres and the Choir had the opportunity to sing a song together with the famous singer Tonya Graves - a patron of ALTER EGO. Pictures are available

Prague International Schools sport competitions
