Years 2-3: The International General Certificate of Secondary Education
The IGCSE is an academic course. It involves both factual learning and the development of practical skills which students are likely to make use of in their daily lives. The IGCSE is administered by the University of Cambridge and is internationally recognized.
Students follow a two-year course, at the end of which they sit examinations in a wide range of subjects when they are 15 or 16 years old.
Students at the English College are required to study the following subjects:
English Language; French, German or Spanish; Mathematics; Combined Science (Biology, Physics and Chemistry); Geography; History; Music, Art or Drama. Students on the Czech programme study Czech for IGCSE, and students on the international programme study Czech for beginners.
A booklet giving more details of these courses is published separately.
IGCSE examination results are graded from A* to G. Although these are all pass grades, a minimum of five grades at A* to C is normally regarded as essential if a student wishes to continue into the Upper School at the College and continue to university.
All students have lessons in PE, ICT leading to the Cambridge International Diploma in Information and Communication Technology, and PSME. These subjects are not examined at IGCSE.
