Years 4 and Years 5-6 (Upper School)

Year 4

Students on the Czech Curricular Programme follow a course which is designed to prepare them for the IB Diploma programme they will follow in Years 5 and 6. Students on the International Curricular Programme can move directly from Year 3 to Year 5, if they achieve a minimum of five A*-C grades at IGCSE.

Years 5-6: The International Baccalaureate

In Years 5 and 6, students on both the International and Czech Programmes follow a course of study which leads to the International Baccalaureate Diploma qualification. The International Baccalaureate is designed to 'develop enquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people, who will help to create a better and more peaceful world though intercultural understanding and respect'. The English College is unique in Prague in that the IB Diplomas of students on the Czech Curricular Programme are recognized by the Czech Ministry of Education as their Maturita qualification. These students are able to apply for places at both Czech and international universities. The English College offers an almost unrivalled choice of subjects for a school of its size.

To be eligible for the award of the IB Diploma all candidates must:
  • Study six subjects, one subject from each of following groups
  • Study three of these six subjects at Higher Level
  • Submit an Extended Essay of 4000 words in one of the subjects of the IB curriculum
  • Follow a course in the Theory of Knowledge
  • Complete the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) programme.

Group 1     Language A1 (native language): Czech Curricular Programme students study Czech. For other students the Language A1 is English or their own mother tongue, for which the College provides teaching to IB level. The course is literature-based and includes selections from world literature.
Group 2   Language B (second or foreign language): French B, German B or Spanish B. The courses in Language B are practical and language-based.
English A2.The English A2 course also involves the study of literature, but is slightly more language-based than Language A1 and is designed for non-native students of English who have a very high level of competence. Alternatively, students may study a second Language A1.
Group 3   Individuals and Societies: Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy or Psychology.
Group 4   Experimental Sciences: Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Group 5   Mathematics: Mathematics or Mathematical Studies.
Group 6   Arts: Music or Visual Arts or a second subject from groups 1 to 4.

A booklet giving full details of these courses is published separately.

IB Points

In each subject, these range from 1 point (minimum) to 7 points (maximum) at both Standard and Higher Level. The award of the Diploma requires at least 24 points and the successful completion of the Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay and CAS.

Native Language Programme

Students whose mother tongue is not English or Czech also have the opportunity to study their own language to IB level. When a student enters the Native Language Programme, the College will employ a teacher to teach the student the literature of his or her language. This programme enables foreign students to maintain literacy skills in their own language while living abroad.

The following languages have been taken at the College in the last ten years: Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Vietnamese.
