Emily Rankin

Deputy Head & Head of Upper School, Whole School Teaching and Learning Lead

Emily was working as a newspaper journalist in Minnesota when she began volunteering as a reading tutor at a local school and promptly found more purpose and joy in classrooms than at her reporting job. Thus, she added an English teaching qualification to her Bachelor of Arts degrees (Summa Cum Laude) in Mass Media and English Writing and started her pedagogical career at the ECP in 2006. She then returned to Midwest America, where she taught and directed plays in urban state schools, obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching (Hons) from Hamline University, served as an IB Coordinator, evaluated state standardised English tests by selective invitation and globe-trotted whenever possible.

However, Kafka’s analogy of Prague – “the little mother with claws” – proved true and she found herself back in the Czech Republic after completing an Education Specialist postgraduate degree in Educational Leadership at St Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Outside of the ECP, Emily is the Regional Leader of #WomenEdCzech, a UK-based grassroots movement that connects existing and aspiring leaders in education, and she is taken with this country’s cinema, theatrical scenography and turistické stezky.
