ECP student Kryštof Sršeň is one of the talented secondary school students who can experience scientific work in practice within the Open Science project of the Czech Academy of Sciences. This 12-month programme is under the supervision of specialists and students could choose from 105 topics.

TV coverage

Our student Kryštof Sršeň talks about his experience with the project on metropolitan television PrahaTV where he is featured in a spot presenting the Open Science project. You can watch the video here:

“In this lab, I have done gel electrophoresis, DNA protein distribution, and various methods of protein purification,” said Kryštof Sršeň, a student at The English College in Prague.

“The Academy of Sciences provides opportunities for secondary school students to participate in real research. They can learn what contemporary science is about and apply theoretical knowledge in practice,” said Michaela Marková, PR manager of the Open Science project.

ECP and Academy of Sciences

Interest in the project is great. 700 students applied this year and 100 of them succeeded.

“The one-year internships give rise to very interesting outcomes. Students learn to understand a scientific topic and formulate conclusions in professional articles or presentations. In addition, they learn to popularise science and present it to the public. All participants of the project take part in the largest science festival organised by the Academy of Sciences,” said Michaela Marková.

Open Sciences and ECP successes

Within the Open Science 2019 project, Kryštof has already received a prize for his research. He presented his study with title “Rekombinantní příprava selektivních IGF-2 analogů” at The Student Scientific Conference. This event took place at The Institute of Molecular Genetics of The Czech Academy of Sciences in November.

Kryštof is not the only ECP student involved in the project. Emma Hamplová, Emma Kurucová, Karolína Zvoníčková were also presenting their work at the same conference.

Furthermore, four other ECP students have obtained places with the Academy of Sciences for 2020 internships as well. Congratulatins to Jan Kotrč, Daniel Moravec, Tereza Nohejlová and Nella Országhová.

Christmas Concert 2019

The Christmas Concert was a lovely event on which we ended the festivities of 2019. Once again, it took place in the beautiful Refectory of the Emmaus Monastery. Almost forty students took to the stage with a wide range of performances from soloists, ensembles, bands, and the newly formed ECP Choir. Our talented performers created a warm, festive atmosphere with traditional Christmas favourites and sing-a-long carols. We could also hear a reading from the Czech poet Jiří Orten. In addition, a dramatic excerpt from the upcoming performance of Romeo & Juliet planned for February was included.

This year the Student Council opted for the collection to go to Centrum Locika. It is a local charity which supports children affected by domestic violence. We were happy to welcome a representative from the charity at the concert. Sincere thanks go to our Head of Music, Eliška Hatinová, for her creative efforts and excellent support of students in their preparation of the Christmas Concert. Many thanks also to all the students and staff who contributed to the making of such a successful and entertaining event.

ECP Christmas Market

ECP Christmas Market

The “Winter Wonderland” Christmas Market on Friday marked the beginning of the season to be jolly at the English College. The event was the first of its kind: this year it took place outdoors in the playground! The freezing winter air, the dim fairy lights and bright red Santa hats created a festive aura. Therefore, almost the whole school was attracted to participate. Tutor classes each had their own stand, selling everything from home-made gingerbread to nachos with cheese or a quiz about teachers of the school. Congratulations to Y5 Ignis, who raised the most money for charity. Overall, the Christmas Market raised over 8,000czk for Centrum LOCIKA, a charity helping children affected by domestic violence, and almost 2,000czk for the Kačenka dětem organisation. Thank you to everybody involved!

Lecture of Jan Bubeník at The English College

30 years of freedom

17th November 1989 was undoubtedly an important day in Czech history. After more than 30 years, this event was presented to us by Jan Bubeník, who gave an engaging lecture as one of the most important student activists of the Velvet Revolution. The lecture lasting less than an hour and a half inspired the audience so much that Mr. Bubeník had to leave before he could answer all the interesting questions asked by our students.

Mr. Bubeník described the course of the revolution through his eyes. He told about the clashes between the demonstrators and the police units in which he found himself. Furthermore, the students learned more about Bubeník’s life, such as how he studied medicine at Charles University in Prague, sat in the then House of the People as the youngest member of parliament, studied in the United States, etc.

It was obvious that most students were interested in this history. The lecture went very well and most of the students surveyed had nothing but words of praise for Mr. Bubeník.

Havel’s play Memorandum

Havel's Memorandum

We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary at the English College in Prague this year. In recognition of our Founder Patron, Václav Havel, our Head of Drama, Logan Hillier prepared a performance of Memorandum.

Consequently, the senior school production presented this Havel’s play at Divadlo Na Prádle last week. This is a not-for-profit production and all the monies from tickets went towards funds for the ECP’s Václav Havel Scholarship.

In keeping with the ECP’s cross curricular theme of Technology this academic year, the setting of the play uses stylistic inspiration by 1960s Futurism. This is a great chance to explore, examine and interpret the important creative and intellectual themes in Havel’s work. To sum up, it is offering an important insight into the philosophy of our Founder Patron as a playwright.

Arts Faculty Microsite

Arts at ECP

Our new microsite is a vibrant online space to explore the offerings of the Arts Faculty in more detail. In other words, we post updates, inspiration, articles and student gallery previews from Art, Music and Drama. With a burgeoning schedule of events, we intend to provide information through the site on our upcoming shows.

We are definitely keen to involve student voice. Therefore, we look forward to encouraging imaginative and insightful content from ECP’s own emerging actors, musicians, artists and dancers. In addition, this is also a fantastic space to explore the wider challenges, criticisms and current trends faced at present. Our first post kicked off with the question, “Why are the Arts important?” –  We are delighted to invite you to view the answer at arts.englishcollege.cz.

The English College in Prague – Come and join us!

Come and join us!

Open Days 15. 1. and 11. 2. 2020.

It is 25 years since our iconic blue doors opened to students for the very first time. The English College in Prague – Anglické gymnazium o.p.s. is a selective six-year English grammar school, which is also part of the Czech school system. In 1995 it became the first school to offer the International Baccalaureate in the Czech Republic and every year around 70 of our students take the full IB Diploma exams.

25th Anniversary Founders’ Day

Founders’ Day is a great opportunity for the whole English College community to come together. It is when we thank the people who founded the ECP. The event takes place every year on a date roughly halfway between the birthdays of our two Founder Patrons, Prince Charles and Václav Havel.

This year’s Founders’ Day was very special. It is 25 years since our iconic blue doors opened to students for the very first time. So last week, we celebrated the vision, hard work and dedication of our two Founder Governors, Ann Lewis – our current Chairman of Governors – and Dr Martyn Bond.

We looked back at the early days of the College and celebrated our achievements. There were speeches and students entertained us with readings and musical performances. We also had the chance to see our talented artists’ Pre-IB Visual Arts work, exhibited for the first time.

Former Headmasters

We were delighted that ECP’s first three Headmasters – Hubert Ward, Albert Hudspeth and Peter De Voil – were able to join us for Founders’ Day. Hubert Ward was appointed in 1992, before the College opened. It was he who recruited the first teachers, support staff and students. He also supervised the restoration of the empty primary school that was to become ECP’s home. Dressed in his academic gown, as he was on that first day in September 1994, he read the speech he made to students and staff on the very first morning. Since then, over 1350 students have graduated from the English College with the full IB Diploma.

ECP Patrons

It was a great honour for us that our current Czech Patron, Karel Schwarzenberg, was also present at Founders’ Day. He congratulated the ECP on their 25th anniversary and although our UK Founder Patron, Prince Charles, could not be with us in person, he also sent us his congratulations.

Achievements

But as well as an opportunity to look back at the early days of the ECP, Founders’ Day is also an occasion to celebrate our achievements. Five students received Talent Awards and fifteen were presented with Founders’ Academic Prizes. Some of last year’s award winners told us how they had spent their prize money. One of them was Michal Vu, who had bought a camera to capture his exciting longboard run. The talent and energy of the musical performances delighted the audience. We also heard a preview of the Drama department’s special 25th anniversary production. To show our appreciation of our Czech Founder Patron, The Memorandum is being staged at Divadlo Na Prádle on 22-23 November.

President of the Student Council

And finally, the newly-elected President of the Student Council, Alfred Byrne, delighted everyone with a witty and perceptive speech. He described his fellow students as potatoes although gratifyingly, he meant they were well-rounded, rather than starchy, dull and boring!
