ECP Christmas Market

The “Winter Wonderland” Christmas Market on Friday marked the beginning of the season to be jolly at the English College. The event was the first of its kind: this year it took place outdoors in the playground! The freezing winter air, the dim fairy lights and bright red Santa hats created a festive aura. Therefore, almost the whole school was attracted to participate. Tutor classes each had their own stand, selling everything from home-made gingerbread to nachos with cheese or a quiz about teachers of the school. Congratulations to Y5 Ignis, who raised the most money for charity. Overall, the Christmas Market raised over 8,000czk for Centrum LOCIKA, a charity helping children affected by domestic violence, and almost 2,000czk for the Kačenka dětem organisation. Thank you to everybody involved!

Lecture of Jan Bubeník at The English College

30 years of freedom

17th November 1989 was undoubtedly an important day in Czech history. After more than 30 years, this event was presented to us by Jan Bubeník, who gave an engaging lecture as one of the most important student activists of the Velvet Revolution. The lecture lasting less than an hour and a half inspired the audience so much that Mr. Bubeník had to leave before he could answer all the interesting questions asked by our students.

Mr. Bubeník described the course of the revolution through his eyes. He told about the clashes between the demonstrators and the police units in which he found himself. Furthermore, the students learned more about Bubeník’s life, such as how he studied medicine at Charles University in Prague, sat in the then House of the People as the youngest member of parliament, studied in the United States, etc.

It was obvious that most students were interested in this history. The lecture went very well and most of the students surveyed had nothing but words of praise for Mr. Bubeník.

Havel’s play Memorandum

Havel's Memorandum

We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary at the English College in Prague this year. In recognition of our Founder Patron, Václav Havel, our Head of Drama, Logan Hillier prepared a performance of Memorandum.

Consequently, the senior school production presented this Havel’s play at Divadlo Na Prádle last week. This is a not-for-profit production and all the monies from tickets went towards funds for the ECP’s Václav Havel Scholarship.

In keeping with the ECP’s cross curricular theme of Technology this academic year, the setting of the play uses stylistic inspiration by 1960s Futurism. This is a great chance to explore, examine and interpret the important creative and intellectual themes in Havel’s work. To sum up, it is offering an important insight into the philosophy of our Founder Patron as a playwright.

Arts Faculty Microsite

Arts at ECP

Our new microsite is a vibrant online space to explore the offerings of the Arts Faculty in more detail. In other words, we post updates, inspiration, articles and student gallery previews from Art, Music and Drama. With a burgeoning schedule of events, we intend to provide information through the site on our upcoming shows.

We are definitely keen to involve student voice. Therefore, we look forward to encouraging imaginative and insightful content from ECP’s own emerging actors, musicians, artists and dancers. In addition, this is also a fantastic space to explore the wider challenges, criticisms and current trends faced at present. Our first post kicked off with the question, “Why are the Arts important?” –  We are delighted to invite you to view the answer at arts.englishcollege.cz.

25th Anniversary Founders’ Day

Founders’ Day is a great opportunity for the whole English College community to come together. It is when we thank the people who founded the ECP. The event takes place every year on a date roughly halfway between the birthdays of our two Founder Patrons, Prince Charles and Václav Havel.

This year’s Founders’ Day was very special. It is 25 years since our iconic blue doors opened to students for the very first time. So last week, we celebrated the vision, hard work and dedication of our two Founder Governors, Ann Lewis – our current Chairman of Governors – and Dr Martyn Bond.

We looked back at the early days of the College and celebrated our achievements. There were speeches and students entertained us with readings and musical performances. We also had the chance to see our talented artists’ Pre-IB Visual Arts work, exhibited for the first time.

Former Headmasters

We were delighted that ECP’s first three Headmasters – Hubert Ward, Albert Hudspeth and Peter De Voil – were able to join us for Founders’ Day. Hubert Ward was appointed in 1992, before the College opened. It was he who recruited the first teachers, support staff and students. He also supervised the restoration of the empty primary school that was to become ECP’s home. Dressed in his academic gown, as he was on that first day in September 1994, he read the speech he made to students and staff on the very first morning. Since then, over 1350 students have graduated from the English College with the full IB Diploma.

ECP Patrons

It was a great honour for us that our current Czech Patron, Karel Schwarzenberg, was also present at Founders’ Day. He congratulated the ECP on their 25th anniversary and although our UK Founder Patron, Prince Charles, could not be with us in person, he also sent us his congratulations.

Achievements

But as well as an opportunity to look back at the early days of the ECP, Founders’ Day is also an occasion to celebrate our achievements. Five students received Talent Awards and fifteen were presented with Founders’ Academic Prizes. Some of last year’s award winners told us how they had spent their prize money. One of them was Michal Vu, who had bought a camera to capture his exciting longboard run. The talent and energy of the musical performances delighted the audience. We also heard a preview of the Drama department’s special 25th anniversary production. To show our appreciation of our Czech Founder Patron, The Memorandum is being staged at Divadlo Na Prádle on 22-23 November.

President of the Student Council

And finally, the newly-elected President of the Student Council, Alfred Byrne, delighted everyone with a witty and perceptive speech. He described his fellow students as potatoes although gratifyingly, he meant they were well-rounded, rather than starchy, dull and boring!

Lecture on Technology

The ECP Lecture and Talk Programme for this academic year opened recently with a thought-provoking lecture on the topic “Hostile propaganda and the Abuse of the Internet”. It was delivered by the CEO of Semantic Visions, Mr František Vrábel. Semantic Visions is a Czech company that collects and analyses 90% of the world’s online news in real time. In his talk, Mr Vrábel demonstrated how countries, as well as individuals can create hostile propaganda and spread disinformation.

There was a lively question and answer session at the end of the lecture. Our guest had to respond to some very challenging questions. Mr Vrábel underlined the need for quality education in today’s world. When asked by students how they can identify which information they are presented with is true, he replied that it is important to attend a school like ECP to be able to make one’s own informed and independent opinion. Mr Vrábel also pointed out how Facebook is misusing the data of users. He added that Facebook also generates influence by exposing the users to targeted advertising and content.

Message from the new Student Council President

ECP student council

Kristýnka Nguyen (the Vice President of the Student Council) and I (Fred Byrne – President of the Student Council) plan to have a big impact on the English College in Prague. We ran on a platform to make the Student Council more transparent, accessible and democratic. We are doing this by making structural changes to it. The structural changes include a new suggestion form, representatives of each tutor group and a second election half way through the year.

Negotiations with the school’s management will become routine so that changes benefiting students are made more frequently. We will push for a new student to teacher feedback programme, a split of the interhouse sports competitions to the upper and lower school and the purchase of bean bag seats for relaxing.

We will also work towards reducing the school’s carbon footprint and ask nearby businesses to offer student discounts. The traditional role of the SC is also to plan events such as the Christmas Fair or Halloween Fair. We will, of course, continue to organise them. My hope is to make all students feel that they have a voice. When we leave the Student Council, we want it to be in a state that is more transparent and democratic.

CERGE EI

This year, eight talented ECP students have been selected from schools across Prague to take part in the prestigious CERGE-EI programme. The lucky Year 5 economists will work alongside PhD students from Charles University. Therefore, they will gain a deeper understanding of economic theory and pursue a research project. Subsequently, it will culminate in a final presentation in December. We wish them luck!

CERGE-EI (Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute) is a joint workplace of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. This is a unique partnership with the aim to promote modern education and research in economics.

ECP has been taking part in this brilliant programme for three years now. The photograph and the video show participants from previous years.

House Parents’ Meeting and ECP Family Barbecue

ECP building

The English College held a House Parents’ Meeting and Family Barbecue in the second week of its 25th anniversary year. It was a great opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s tutor, Senior Tutor and other teachers. After a short introductory assembly in the Gym for all parents, there was an opportunity to meet with individual tutors in their house groups. To make identification of the houses easier, tutors as well as parents received lanyards in house colours. They are blue for Aqua, red for Ignis, yellow for Ventus and green for Terra. Everyone was then able to find people from their house more easily. There were also balloons in house colours to emphasise the importance of community values expressed through the house system.

The event was closed with a well-attended family barbecue on the school’s playground where parents could talk informally with ECP staff as well as other parents over nice food and drink. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making it a really successful event!
