Distance Learning at ECP

ECP and Google Classroom

English College staff and students have not only navigated through our second round of distance learning, but also have truly made the most of it in fascinating ways. Drop into online lessons and you’ll see students engaged in teaching and learning that is meaningful and relevant. They’re participating in reciprocal teaching, interactive whiteboard activities, e-quizzes, polling, small-group discussion in breakout rooms, project teamwork, note-taking on work modelled via visualisers and more. Teachers can provide written and verbal feedback on work electronically, as well as give real-time guidance while watching students actually type in a document or collaborate in an online meeting.

In our first lockdown, teachers had only about 48 hours to transfer their practice online, and they did so effectively despite many obstacles; this really is a testament to their professionalism and care for our students. The evolution from the first lockdown to this second bout has been profound, as now we have a revamped Distance Learning Policy, more technological equipment, training opportunities and many weeks of experience to draw from.

Assessment during closure

We have also discussed assessment during remote learning at length, as we want to measure student progress without relying on exams that we cannot provide exam conditions for whilst online. This has led to innovation and variety in how we evaluate student work, and our newly developed guidelines around summative assessment should ensure that we have a firm grasp on student knowledge and understanding despite the absence of formal exams.

Safeguarding Alliance Initiative Award during COVID-19

The English College in Prague has been recognised by the UK-based training organisation The Safeguarding Alliance. They have presented the College with their Safeguarding Alliance Initiative Award to acknowledge the work we have done to adapt our safeguarding policies and procedures during the Covid-19 pandemic. This recognition comes along with an award certificate and an award logo.

The ECP had to provide three examples to demonstrate how it meets the criteria, including evidence of the initiative and impact:

  • Adaptation of safeguarding policies and procedures during COVID-19;
  • Identification of vulnerable pupils and ensuring their safety during COVID-19;
  • Innovative approach to safeguarding children and young people during COVID-19.

The Safeguarding Alliance is a premier centre of safeguarding excellence. It ensures that organisations maintain best practice to keep children and young people safe.

ECP Graduate’s Success Featured in the Media

ECP graduate David Jehlička

2020 ECP graduate, David Jehlička, has recently been featured in the media where he has been described as an ‘inspiring personality’. You can read the idnes.cz interview with David via this link and watch the interview he gave to DVTV here.

London School of Economics

After receiving the Lord Holme Prize for Service to the Community for an unprecedented two years’ running, David is now preparing to attend the prestigious London School of Economics. He will study for a three-year Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Political Science. David says that it was his time at the ECP that encouraged him to think about studying abroad.

British Ambassador’s Young Person of the Year

David also holds the title The British Ambassador’s Young Person of the Year. He received his award from the Ambasador and Eva Jiřicná at a ceremony at the British Embassy last year.

Barta Scholarship

David was only able to study at the ECP thanks to a Jan Barta Scholarship. Jan also graduated from the College, in 2004. After completing his studies at University College London, he has gone on to become a successful entrpreneur and investor. His projects include ePojisteni.cz, the largest online car insurance comparison website in the Czech Republic. Jan says of the ECP “It helped me develop vital skills I prize very highly, even more than the academic experience. These include staying constantly curious, the ability to reason and solve problems and being able to give something back.” In addition to helping David, Jan generously supports several other students financially. In the past three years, two former Barta Scholars have gained places at Oxford University.

Reciprocity

The late Lord Holme was ECPs first Chairman of Governors. He always encouraged our students to ‘put something back’. Jan Barta and David Jehlička are both great examples of this guiding principle, which is something that everyone at the English College strives to achieve.

House Challenge Day

The first ECP House Challenge Day took place on Wednesday, 27th May. Although physically distanced, all students competed for their House online by completing selected challenges. In the morning, they had to choose one physical challenge and in the afternoon they took part in an intellectual challenge. It was not just a day without  computers, it was much :more.

All participants had to upload a photo or video of what they had achieved in their activities. They managed to challenge themselves and learn or improve skills in various areas. Many students chose activities they would otherwise never have done. And the outcome was fascinating! There is a lot of creativity out there!

At the beginning there was a Starter challenge in which time was important and students had to construct a paper box according to instructions nets. The winner was Petr Chytil from Year 2 who won Ventus house’s  first points for the quickest submission.

When all the activities were finished, teachers started assessing the provided entries to find winners in individual categories. They had to go through 324 files! Some students even involved their families in the videos, like Aneta Řehořová in her dance video:

Here are the results:
